The Space of Synagogues

In 1909 the historian Majer Balaban invited to visit the place where “the entire history of the Jews in this city comes together.” This was the site of the Great City Synagogue, the Golden Rose (Turei Zahav) Synagogue, and Beth Hamidrash, the heart of historical Jewish Quarter. Destroyed in the Holocaust, they became the sites of neglect and symbols of history ignored. During the last twenty years this area was separated from the views of passers-by with a high metal fence and the opposite side was occupied with summer terraces of neighbouring restaurants

On September 4, 2016 the Space of Synagogues official inauguration has taken place. This event became a result of discussions, researches and project planning that went on for more than 7 years. It has brought together academics, experts, representatives of the Jewish communities, and the city authorities. The aim of this enduring cooperation was commemorating the history of Jews in Lviv, as well as better understanding of the city’s history and heritage both for its inhabitants and for visitors.

The key motto of the project is “Jewish history of Lviv — common heritage and responsibility”.

У 1909 році історик Маєр Балабан запрошував сучасників відвідати місце, де "зійшлася уся історія євреїв цього міста". Мова йшла про серце історичного єврейського кварталу, де було розташовано Велику міську синагогу, синагогу "Золота Роза" (Турей Заграв) та Бейт Гамідраш (Будинок навчання). Знищена, зрівняна зі землею в часі Голокосту сьогодні ця дільниця перетворилася на занедбане місце і символ зневаженої історії. Протягом останніх двадцяти років ця ділянка була відгороджена від сторонніх поглядів великим металевим парканом, а на іншому боці стояли літні столики сусідніх ресторанів.

4 вересня 2016 року відбулася офіційна інавгурація "Простору Синагог". Ця подія стала результатом дискусій, досліджень та розробки проектів, які тривали більше 7 років. Навколо цієї події об’єдналися учені, експерти, представники єврейської громади Львова та міські чиновники. Метою такої тривалої співпраці стало як вшанування історії євреїв у Львові, так і краще розуміння спільної міської історії та спільної спадщини самими львів’янами і гостями міста.

Ключовий лейтмотив проекту: "Єврейська історія Львова – це спільна спадщина і відповідальність".
